kyle geiger returns on his home label with a set of tracks designed to recapture the basic function of techno. it s music to sweat to at a party. additionally, this package aims to capture a sense of timelessness through melody interwoven with a pumping breed of techno rhythms. the title track, homecoming, starts with a bottom-heavy percussive workout, then presses forward with an array of slowly filtering brighter synth stabs. the breakdown sees an arpeggiated synth slowly overtake the rhythm of the track just long enough to build tension and bring things back to full speed. the verge is a very stripped back, drum track style cruiser, which builds tension with a rising distorted pulse sound filtering in and out. just as it seems that the back half of the track will carry on as planned, a running melody comes in and changes the direction of the entire track. the verge (beat tool) is identical to the original, but build for those a little shy about slightly more upfront melodies.

craig peyton was a mainstay in nyc jazz and dance music beginning in the 70s. from playing on dan hartmans -vertigo/relight my fire- to his work on boogie funk productions with daryl payne, he is one of the unsung heroes of the era where disco transitioned into house music. his drum machine and synth based cover of william devaughans -just be thankful- came out on profile records in 1983, a daring move for a white man trained on the vibes. he gives the jam a haunting and funky rework that has only escalated in popularity over the years. it has been bootlegged extensively while original copies remain quite elusive.

marquis hawkes returns with a new ep for houndstooth, sweet. pairing up a sugary r&b sample with his signature swinging but slamming beats, opening cut when i get home is a return to the flavour of last year s summer smash cant find a reason, although this time around, it s more tracky and introspective. next up, a different facet of hawkes production talents is reprised with at the witness stand, a trippy take on classic ny freestyle. opening the b-side, title track sweet furthers hawkes trademark rough and ready house sound with distinctive vocal hooks and a hip-twitching rhythm, whilst bringing up the rear, what a relief is a raw but inescapably funky drum workout that would make the likes of traxmen & eric martin proud.

food music welcomes a1 bassline to the label to release his first lp - technicality. the album’s title draws from the club night “technicality”, a monthly drum & bass night at herbal in east london, which is run by chris inperspective and continued the sound of early reinforced and metalheadz records as well as pushing new forward thinking music. the album is centred around growing up as a teenager discovering this jungle/drumfunk sound through his college friend rahim (lab creation), where the likes on fold, ben ufo, breakage would attend the club. in addition to well received records on dirtybird, pets recordings and his collaborative work with leon vynehall as laszlo dancehall, the album is a stamp on a1’s sound and his influences from his teenage years to growing up and discovering house and techno.

subversive delivers a follow-up to last season’s vrv release chainbreaker, this time with two measured explorations of atmosphere and movement. the title track, domestique, builds its drama around delayed synthesis, crafting a wash delayed environment that keeps a strong pace. corosync emerges from a similar approach but intensifies the drum programming and strips away melodic layers. vrv label bosses raíz rework corosync with emphasis on thicker beat construction and synthesized psychedelia. all the tracks play on the best of the detroit-berlin connection and are primed for in-the-mix hypnosis.

transmitting from new york (via toronto), jex aka jex opolis has so far been known as the man behind and in front of the good timin label. infamous for its boogie burner bombs to quote discogs member kutter karlo jex, trades his label for running back and a shifts the gear. up with the tempo and down with the lights, there still is a variety of styles. studio e is named after an after hours spot in edmonton that the record s author partied at in the early 2000s, also sounds like something ivan smagghe would have enjoyed at that point in time. laxmi tool is referencing classic tribal house and a street in pune, where jex wifes grandma bought the drum used in this track. on the flip, harpa brags and boasts with its trampoline bass line, while la casa surfs some timpani waves.

with b&w printed sleeve - housed in cover art from p.a.m.s misha hollenbach. studio styrka springs a leak with three new tracks from villa abo, the mainstay of veteran swedish analogue unit frak. released by australian label noise in my head, sibilant is the product of a mutual appreciation for severed heads and terse tapes, both of which propelled a 13 year old jan svensson to form frak back in 1987. on warming up signal, svensson sounds the nuclear alarm with an unforgiving techno meltdown that leaves no survivors. the flip gives our disintegrated minds some relief with drum-magnet, a paranoid beat track recorded in collaboration with karlskrona punk rocker nebula, and the hypnotic syndrome beautiful.

after debuting on rebirth with their new alias easy to remember (inspired by the famous song from st germain of the same name) niro and elia perrone release now on their own unclear label. the ep contains two originals backed by three remixes.royal rumbles obscure synth melody and obsessive pitch changes pave the way to sinister background noises and beats, whereas jazz cowboys free style drumming, syncopated rhythm and xylophones blur the line between house music and free improvisation. minimonos remix of royal rumble brings the kick drum to the fore and adds a staccato bass line coupled with some stop & gos that spice up the vibe of the track. giulio etiopes rendition of jazz cowboys adds some deep pads, flute sounds and a trumpet sample leading into a dreamy break, with def safaris dark rework turning it instead into a galloping percussive tool.

after recording various psych soul and funk tracks on the whiz record label the real thing carried on after leaving the label to record more studio cuts with musician and producer stu gardner. here they let it rip with an incredible fast version of james browns *give it up, turnit loose* ... and they left in that all important secret ingredient of a lovely long drum break. stu gardner himself took to the microphone on this track, with various background vocals and screams, and did the vocals for the amazing b-side *it s a family thang*!

mount liberation unlimited s debut 12inch on junk yard connections, astro travelling life, has become one of the most in demand deep house releases of 2014. a year on, they finally deliver a follow-up, this time on superconscious records. all three tracks primarily succeed due to their blend of rough analogue elements, crusty drum machine hits, tape hiss, and so on and the kind of dreamy, stargazing chords and melodies that have always been a hall mark of classic deep house. its the detroit techno influenced polyphonic spree, all cymbal-heavy shuffle, stretched-out chords and funky synthesizers - that arguably stands out, though its a tough call given the high quality threshold throughout.

youth stand up! is a collaborative recording project between glasgows green door studio, lebeha drumming center in hopkins, belize, and the tafi cultural institute based in tafi atome, ghana. the results of the collaboration are this nine track album released on autonomous africa. all proceeds from the youth stand up! album sales will be split between tuteme band, belize and tafi cultural institute’s fund to build their recording studio and cultural centre. there will be two 12inches released in late 2015 / early 2016 featuring remixes of tracks from the album by jd twitch, midland, auntie flo and hodge. the 12inches will eau also include an additional bonus track recorded at the original sessions.

100% dynamite explores the links between reggae, jazz, funk and soul. the album is jam-packed with reggae tunes that have crossed-over and become cult dancefloor hits in clubland such as >greedy g<, >rocksteady< and >granny scratch scratch<. fourteen tracks of music that show the influence that american jazz, funk and soul music has had on jamaican reggae. the proximity of the west indies to the usa meant that many jamaican musicians would continue to be influenced by american styles of music whilst at the same time continuing to define new styles of their own such as ska, rocksteady and dub.

tattoo and street artist by day, techno producer when dusk hits, the multi talented andreas andreasson aka diagenetic origin returns to sonic groove for his annual installment of heavy, deep and diligent techno. with the *golden age ep*, the berlin-based producer showcases a diverse collection of moody cuts, from the futuristic longings of the rhythmically challenging *telepathic future* to the deep cavernous percussion workout of *the awakening*. drawn out aerial melodies are both supported and shattered by andreas penchant for heavy primal drum programming, serving as a reminder of his formative years spent drumming for punk and hardcore bands in sweden. spanning the depth and breadth of the techno scale, *golden age* commands attention and adds to his consistently qualitative output on sonic groove.

a slightly fresher direction with this ep - no, we’re not a couple is a funked up rolling thing with jungle subs, dubby hats and percussion, shifting textures and film score strings. cortisol is a stressful warehouse jam in 7/8, filtered every which way then taken to church. pacy but doesn’t really sound it. white mice is an afterhours, dubbed-out, drum machine samba workout for smoky basements. slow but doesn’t really sound it. hope you enjoy em! respect, mosca.

rubber is new label from the hague with a motley mixture of off-radar electronix for both the experimental clubber and home listener. rubber001 is a bold three-tracker. mannequin records head-honcho alessandro adriani hits the nail on the head with his secret weapons. secondly, reigning from finland, 0.5w (halvtrak and stak etop) pans across the room like running with titanium scissors. the cherry on top is this piece of dutch drum-laden poetry, probably on illegal medication, about a bicycle mechanic from the hague by legends unit moebius, reverend cor gout and salo mentale. all on 180 grams of white vinyl in a white jacket.

working out of haarlem, netherlands, aleks has returned with his second release for los angeles-based label, hesperian sound division. different stories features a selection of works from the multifaceted dutch producer, concentrated in the intersection between meditative landscapes, and delicately shuffling drum tracks. offering simplicity in structure, each track exhibits a concise yet detail-oriented approach, translating into four highly organic pieces.

after a series of mesmerising (and massive) eps under his more disco orientated yse saint laur ant moniker pressed for time label head ant plate is back in his deep house mode with an ep of yse goodness no messing about with the opener this loves the same yse goes straight in there with some dancefloor heat that has enough quirk to counteract the house swing. 9828 is all badboy garridge wonk with some excellent detuned chords and a catchy, nagging vocal refrain - swag. on the flip, i gave you my is proper deep house (as in it s actually deep) with some trademark yse chords, blissed out vocal samples and great drum programming. night prescription rounds things off with a homage to the classic us house sound. think chuggles i remember dance but with an east midlands twist.

hedonism is an ethical theory that pleasure, in a sense of satisfaction of desires, is the highest good and proper aim of human life, and this seems to also be hdnsm’s ultimate musical objective. their first release debuted as a kickstarter of “variant ep” v.a. series, showcasing three very different yet highly contemplative creations from cumsecade, anestie gomez and man spider. hdnsm flips the coin and for the second episode of “variant” series it lands on two very solid, incredibly moody and extensive works from fresh talents shcaa and cleymoore. the ep features two very different tracks yet they share the same minimalistic core. both works are blessed with intricate micro-drum arrangements for those feeling groove hungry whilst still standing tall in the experimental abstract realm pleasing those who crave unusual frequencies. a-side’s “masquée” is one of shcaa’s typical rides between sound and silence and it is hard to find another artist who understands sound gaps between grooves better than shcaa does. with his signature vocals and an incredibly delicious duality between acoustic instrumentalism and electronic slamming, this is a groovy, highly deep, very intelligently arranged piece. the flip-side “nebula”, signed by pluie/noir’s boss cleymoore, is a tip of an iceberg when it comes to the art of stripping down. in an apparently thin canvas of minimal drum arrangements there’s a vast amount of sound frequencies underneath a steady ever-kicking groove, tricking your mind into thinking that you’re hearing less than you actually perceive. nebula is hypnotic and dense but focused and sophisticatedly groovy. like the repetitive vocals you’ll hear throughout the b-side, this v.a. sticks to your mind like an addiction of some sort and pushes hdnsm to a new standard of avant-garde and forward-thinking attitude. as before, this vinyl only release comes in a gorgeous cover featuring a painting from max binski and the number of copies available is limited

who better to inaugurate your label than andreas gehm? simple, no-one. glasgow’s schrodinger’s cat is sinking claws and teeth into vinyl with five tracks of blistering tb303 goodness from the cologne man. mr gehm is in fine form as he serves up a quintet of very different cuts. from the warbling wonderment of -blind eyes- to squawking darkness of -jak the floor-, this ep shows how talented this machine musician is. -can you hear me girl- is jilted lover, stalker house, beady eyes peering into misted windows material. the elec pt 1 hood is donned for the dirtiest track of the 12inch. grimy claps are further polluted by bending acid lines in a work overflowing with violence. out of the leftfield comes the finale. -systems go- throbs with rumbling rhythms, a bleeped melody keeping time as drum machines overheat and circuitry melts. mean as ever from andreas gehm. expect tears.
